Members of Oaxaca’s muxe (pronounced “moo-shay”) community took part in a traditional festival in Mexico City. Muxes, or indigenous transvestites, are generally accepted in the community as home helpers, embroiderers, decorators, cooks and entertainers. Most muxe men identify themselves as female and some take hormones to change their appearance. Attendees dressed in traditional clothes, danced to music, and enjoyed traditional food at the event, which is in its third year.
